Explore San Diego's Wine Country

While Northern California might get all the love, we here at The REY know there is more to wine country than Napa Valley. San Diego County boasts over 100 wineries and is renowned for its award-winning Merlots and Chardonnays. Our county is even home to the state’s oldest grapes at Mission San Diego de Alcala, planted in 1769.

Whether you’re lucky enough to live here, are hosting weekend visitors, or are just in town for a few days on business, here are the five San Diego wineries you need to try.

San Diego’s Best Wineries

Carruth Cellars

Carruth Cellars has a mission: to bring grapes to the people and make wine with love and gratitude. This urban winery purchases its grapes from the country and transports them into the city on temperature-controlled trucks. Whether you prefer a Cab, a Syrah, a Malbec, or a blend, there is a taste for every wine lover at Carruth Cellars. Join the wine club and enjoy complimentary tastings, discounts, a monthly bottle of wine, and VIP entry at all winery events.

Carruth is a quick Coaster ride from the downtown Santa Fe Depot train station up to Solana Beach, where boutique shops, art galleries, and great restaurants are all within walking distance.

Milagro Farm Winery

Located in beautiful Ramona Valley, Milagro Farm Winery is dedicated to exceptional winemaking that blends tradition with innovative touches. Spend a Saturday at the estate and pair your Sauvigon Blanc or Rosé with breathtaking views of the sweeping vistas and rolling hills that surround the property. In addition to wine tastings, vineyard hikes, and horseback riding, Milagro is also available for weddings and events.

On your way to, or heading home from Julian, CA? This is the perfect pit stop for a refreshing treat or to pick up a gift for family and friends.

Orfila Vineyards and Winery

The recipient of more than 1,300 medals in both national and international competitions, Orfila Vineyards and Winery is the San Pasqual Valley winery you need to visit. Start with Ambassador’s Syrah or cool down on a warm day with their palate-pleasing Chardonnay.

Stop by the tasting room at noon (Escondido only) for a free daily tour or treat yourself to a private group tour, where the outdoor space is perfect for picnics. Each tasting includes six samples and one logo glass to take home.

Solterra Winery & Kitchen

You don’t have to venture far from the beach to enjoy one of San Diego’s best wineries. Solterra Winery and Kitchen is located in North County where the climate is perfect for wine storage. All of the grapes here are sourced from area farmers, so you can enjoy a nice bottle of vino and know you’re supporting local agriculture.

Solterra offers four flights to choose from when you visit the tasting room. Choose from all whites, Iberian, Rhone, or Bordeaux wine flights. Be sure to check out Solterra’s food menu too. There are many delicious small plates and tapas to share.

Temecula Valley

Temecula Valley Wine Country is renowned for its many spectacular wineries near San Diego. With so many wineries and vineyards in the region, we can’t choose just one. Perfect for a quick getaway outside the city, but still accessible and easily done in a day or a weekend trip.

Devote your next free weekend to – responsibly – hopping between tasting rooms. Don’t miss: Callaway Vineyard & Winery, Leoness Cellars, Briar Rose Winery, and Wilson Creek Winery.
